Flood Plains and Alluvial Soils of the Pasquotank River Basin
Flood plains are areas of land that border rivers and streams. During high precipitation events when the volume of water exceeds the channel of the stream or river floodplains work to absorb the excess water. During these periods of flooding alluvial soils are created due to the deposition of nutrient rich sediment carried by flood waters. Floodplains provide many different ecosystem services however they are commonly developed which reduces their functioning. The following maps were produced using Web Soil Survey (WSS) for 3 locations within the Pasquotank River Basin. Soil types of a land area can provide a good indication if the areas being surveyed are alluvial or not. The first map is of the Elizabeth City, NC which is in Camden County.
The second map is a section of Currituck County, NC.
The third map is of Downtown Manteo, NC.
